Giants Beat Tigers 4-3, Win 2nd World Series In Three Years

The San Francisco Giants won their second World Series in three years, defeating the Detroit Tigers in Game 4 by a final score of 4-3.

Marco Scutaro drove in Ryan Theriot from second base with a two-out, RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to give the Giants the go-ahead run.

Sergio Romo struck out the side in the bottom of the inning, catching Miguel Cabrera looking for the final out.

Matt Cain gave up three earned runs over seven innings for the Giants, while Max Scherzer went 6.1 and also allowing three earned runs for the Tigers.

Cain gave up home runs to Cabrera and Delmon Young.

The Giants took the lead in the top of the second when Brandon Belt drove in Hunter Pence with a triple, and regained the lead in the 6th on a two-run homer by Buster Posey.

Pablo Sandoval was named World Series MVP.

The Giants became the first team to throw consecutive World Series shutouts in nearly a half-century, blanking the Tigers 2-0 on Saturday night for a commanding 3-0 lead.

Ryan Vogelson, Tim Lincecum, and closer Sergio Romo combined on the 5-hit shutout.

After playing a nearly perfect Game 3, the Giants will turn to their ace Matt Cain to try for a sweep Sunday against Max Scherzer.

Madison Bumgarner shut down the Tigers for seven innings, then the Giants took advantage of a bunt that stayed fair, and then went on to a 2-0 win Thursday night for a 2-0 edge in the World Series.

Gregor Blanco's bunt single trickled to a stop inches fair on the infield dirt, setting up Brandon Crawford's run-scoring double-play ground ball in the seventh inning.

Hunter Pence added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, scoring Angel Pagan.

Pablo Sandoval hit three home runs and joined Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, and Albert Pujols as the only players to do it in the World Series, and the Giants stunned Justin Verlander and the Tigers 8-3 on Wednesday night in Game 1, according to an ESPN.com report.

 "I just didn't execute tonight," Verlander said. "It was kind of a battle from the get-go. They took advantage of that and swung the bat pretty well, especially Pablo and (Marco) Scutaro. A couple of good bounces their way, bad for us."

The Giants are headed to the World Series after a remarkable comeback against the defending champs.

Hunter Pence got the Giants going with a weird double, Matt Cain pitched his second clincher of October and San Francisco closed out Game 7 of the NLCS in a driving rainstorm, beating the Cardinals 9-0 on Monday night.

Giants Force Game 7 Behind Vogelsong

Ryan Vogelsong struck out a career-best nine batters, and the Giants avoided elimination for a second straight game by beating the Cardinals 6-1 on Sunday night, according to an ESPN.com report.

Marco Scutaro delivered a two-run double and Buster Posey drove in his first run of the NLCS with a groundout in the first inning as San Francisco struck early.

Matt Cain and Kyle Lohse are set to pitch in the deciding Game 7, a rematch of Game 3, won by the Cardinals. There's a forecast of rain in the Bay Area during the day.

Barry Zito was at his best Friday night, pitching the Giants back into the NLCS with a 5-0 win over the Cardinals that narrowed its deficit to 3-2.

"This is definitely it for me," Zito said. "Coming here, especially doing it in a Giants uniform. A lot of people were saying stuff about A's days. And for me, the most important thing is doing everything for San Francisco right now."

The Giants' win in Game 5 sent the series back to San Francisco on Sunday.

"It was definitely a surprise," Carpenter said. "I didn't even realize Carlos had hurt himself; there was really no thought process.
